Carbon fiber is an amazing material. It’s light, strong and makes better-performing, more efficient products, from bikes to satellites, tennis rackets to wind turbines. A car made with just 17% bodyweight in carbon fiber generates 5 tonnes less in greenhouse emissions over 10 years than a standard car. But carbon fiber has a massive environmental footprint itself. A single kilo generates almost 30 kilos of greenhouse emissions. That carbon fiber car generates 3 tonnes more emissions during raw material production than a standard car, frontloading the environmental impact when the world is fighting to cut emissions in half by 2030. PDA Ecolab is developing new bio-based materials that can be used by themselves as natural-fiber composites or to enhance carbon-fiber composites for higher performance, lower greenhouse emissions and reduced material costs. PDA believes that the change to sustainable materials offers a unique opportunity to improve product performance. We support composite fabric producers and product manufacturers in sporting goods, automotive, windpower and more through this transition.
